Motorbike riders have staged a protest against paying toll fees at the Tyne Tunnel.

They brought traffic at the tunnel to a standstill on Saturday.

The riders have argued that motorcycles reduce pollution and speed up traffic, and should therefore be exempt from paying a 20p fare.

Tunnel management were "sympathetic" to the bikers' demands and said the toll for motorcycles would be abolished when the new Tyne Tunnel opens in 2014.
